What is a USB decontamination point?

A USB decontamination point, is an IT security device designed to prevent the risks associated with the use of removable storage media, such as :

  • USB flash drives
  • external hard drives
  • SD cards, etc.

This equipment is used to scan these devices to prevent the spread of malicious software within a corporate network or IT infrastructure.

How does a USB decontamination station work?

The USB White Station functions as a security lock. The device then performs a complete scan of the media using several antivirus engines and specialised tools to detect potential threats such as viruses, spyware, ransomware or any other type of malicious code. At TYREX, our kiosks integrate up to 7 parallel threat detection solutions (anti-virus and anti-malware) to detect both known and emerging threats.

If a threat is detected, the USB kiosk will neutralise it. Once the process is complete, the cleaned data can be transferred securely over the network or to another medium.

Deploying a USB decontamination station

In practical terms, the decontamination station can take the form of a free-standing terminal placed at the entrance to a building or in a busy area. It can also be adapted to mobile use, in the form of a mobile station, or to smaller spaces in a reduced form.

How can users be trained to use the TYREX station?

The TYREX solution has been designed to be user friendly. They are ergonomic and extremely easy to use, enabling even inexperienced users to understand and use the available functions independently. TYREX training courses are available for administrators.

Where can TYREX stations be installed?

Depending on the format chosen, TYREX stations offer considerable flexibility for installation in a variety of environments. These stations can be strategically placed in areas where they are easily accessible and useful:

  • Busy public areas and reception halls: These areas are ideal for TYREX stations because they offer maximum visibility and easy access for a large number of people (employees as well as occasional visitors). The stations can also be positioned in common areas, such as meeting rooms or corridors.
  • Internal office areas: TYREX stations can be installed in offices and open spaces. Visible, they remind everyone of the importance of scanning USB media before each use.
  • Factories: In the industrial context, TYREX Stations can be placed in busy areas or adapted in mobile format to accompany engineers and technicians on the machines.

What antivirus and antimalware softwares are included in the TYREX solution?

The TYREX solution incorporates a robust protection system against malware, consisting of seven detection engines. Five of these engines use a signature-based detection method to identify known threats.

In addition, TYREX also includes two advanced antimalware engines based on artificial intelligence:

  • ORION MALWARE
  • GLIMPS MALWARE.

These offer a more dynamic and scalable approach to detecting and neutralising new or unknown threats, continually adapting to new malware methods and variants.

Together, this combination of signature-based engines and artificial intelligence provides comprehensive protection for even the most sensitive organisations, ensuring effective defence against a wide range of digital threats.

How to install a TYREX decontamination station?

The TYREX solution is plug and play. It connects directly to the company’s electrical installation. The stations are configured at the factory, and TYREX offers remote installation support.

TYREX also offers training courses to help kiosk administrators get to grips with the system’s functions.

How to update a TYREX station?

Updates are managed via the solution management server to which the TYREX decontamination stations are attached and connected. This server can be offered :

  • in hosted mode (TYREX SAAS)
  • on premise mode
  • airgap mode

Updates can also be made offline (via USB key).

What are the different TYREX decontamination station formats?

The TYREX solution offers 4 station formats adapted to different environments and needs:

  • TYREX MOBILE is designed for field agents, ideal for large industrial sites, and can be equipped with an optional docking station. This portable device is practical for professionals who need a mobile and secure solution in the field.
  • TYREX SATELLITE is a compact decontamination station that can be wall-mounted, making it ideal for meeting rooms, or in ships, offering flexibility in small or specific spaces.
  • TYREX CONSOLE is a versatile station, suitable for reception areas, office spaces or factories. Its design is such that it can be deployed in environments where a fixed solution is required for regular and easy access.
  • TYREX TOTEM is designed for high-traffic areas such as reception halls or other public areas. This model is freestanding and designed to be accessible and easy to use by a wide audience.

The TYREX CONSOLE is also available with two USB A ports for media-to-media delivery and copying. This enables the TYREX CONSOLE to meet IT security requirements in a variety of professional contexts.

Where are the TYREX station update infrastructures hosted?

In keeping with the TYREX philosophy of a solution designed and manufactured entirely in France, we have chosen to host updates in French data centres.

The infrastructure for updating TYREX stations is hosted in the Paris region in three sovereign data centres operating in redundancy. This configuration guarantees high availability and reliability of update services.

What are the dangers of USB?

USB media represent a significant risk vector for IT security. In fact, 37% of digital threats, including viruses, worms, malware, Trojan horses and other malicious software, are designed to penetrate systems via these removable devices.

Yet staff are not always aware of the issues surrounding removable devices. As a Google study reveals, 48% of people pick up and plug in a randomly found USB key. This action can open the door to computer infections and data leaks.

In this context, the use of USB decontamination terminals, such as those provided by the TYREX solution, is a priority. These kiosks analyse and clean USB media before they are connected to systems, helping to prevent IT threats. Our decontamination stations, which benefit from regular updates, can detect both known and new threats, offering you continuous protection.

How to protect workstations from USB-related risks?

An integral part of the TYREX solution, the Workstation Protect agent plays a key role in preventing USB-related risks. It ensures that each external storage device connected to a system has been previously inspected by a TYREX station. If the verification reveals that all or part of the content of the device has not been scanned, the agent is able to restrict access to the file system of the device in question, either partially or totally.

Available as an option, the Workstation Protect agent provides an additional layer of security. Deployable with all TYREX workstations, it acts as an effective barrier against intrusions and prevents the spread of viruses and other malicious software.

How long is the hardware warranty on decontamination stations?

The warranty period for white stations is a minimum of 3 years. This hardware warranty can be extended up to 7 years.

How many antivirus programs can run in parallel on a TYREX decontamination station?

The TYREX solution includes two antivirus engines by default, but is designed to allow the addition of five others, all running in parallel to maximise security. These five signature-based antivirus engines ensure rapid detection of known threats.

For enhanced security, TYREX also incorporates two advanced antimalware engines that leverage artificial intelligence: ORION MALWARE and GLIMPS MALWARE. These advanced systems are particularly effective at detecting emerging and unknown threats, adapting their response in real time to counter evolving cyber attack strategies.

How to make users aware of cyber risks?

The CYBER ARCADE QUIZ module available in TYREX decontamination station solutions can be used to raise awareness while increasing the skills of your users. In the form of a fun quiz, it appears on screen on decontamination stations during device scanning or when the station is not in use.

This module can be customised according to the priority messages your organisation wants to get across.

Can I use a decontamination station in 4G mode?

Yes, TYREX can integrate a 4G router into the stations. Beforehand, we can enrol the SIM cards and associated subscriptions provided by the customer.

What connection modes are possible with a TYREX decontamination station?

The TYREX decontamination station offers several connection modes to suit different working environments:

Can the stations operate disconnected (offline / airgap)?

Yes, TYREX decontamination stations can operate in offline or airgap mode. In this configuration, updates are performed manually via USB keys, in order to guarantee system security even in the absence of a direct network connection.

Are TYREX decontamination stations made in France?

As sovereign solutions, all our decontamination stations are designed, manufactured and assembled in France. They are manufactured in our factory in Limoges. After manufacture, final assembly and finishing are carried out at the company’s head office in Clichy.

Can TYREX decontamination stations be delivered anywhere in the world?

Yes, we have already delivered to more than a hundred destinations around the world.

Is the decontamination station solution available in several languages?

The TYREX solution is available in several languages: French (FR), English (EN), Dutch (NDL), German (ALL) and Spanish (ESP).
